Top 10 Games That Let You Drive Without Paying For Gas

Gas is expensive.  But you already knew that unless you lived in a cave with your eyes shut and your fingers in your ears.  Some people have switched to hybrid cars to avoid the astronomical fees for filling up the tank.  Others have turned to the mass transit system, car pooling, biking and even riding a horse to work.

Do you miss driving your car without thinking of how much it’s going to cost to fill up the tank?  Well, here’s a solution – play a video game that simulates the whole driving experience.

Here are the top 10 recent games that let you drive without the feeling of dread when you pull up to the gas station.

10.  Grand Theft Auto 4 – Xbox 360, Playstation 3

SUV’s, Sports Cars, Motorcycles – you name it, GTAIV let’s you drive it.  Yes, even an MTA bus if you really want to.  From the high rises of “Manhattan” to the brown stones of “Brooklyn,” there’s a lot to see in this game if you just want to cruise the streets from dusk till dawn listening to whatever genre of music you like.  And if you have the urge to unleash some road rage, roll down the window, wreak havoc, and do your best OJ impression as you race around New York, I mean, Liberty City.

9.  WipEout Pulse – PSP

When Armstrong walked on the moon, it was supposed to shepherd in an era of rockets and jet packs for all.  Where’s my jet pack?  Flying cars clearly aren’t here, so you’ll have to settle with this game.  And you can play on the go on your PSP.

8.  Sega Rally Revo – Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PSP

There’s no customization, no damage engine and nothing that statistically differentiates the cars from one another.  But what it lacks in extra features, it makes up for with an extremely enjoyable racing experience with dynamic deformable surfaces which make every lap different from the last.

7.  Flatout Ultimate Carnage – Xbox 360

Smash up your car and perform outrageous stunts while racing against the computer or real drivers online.  Or select the “Ragdoll Olympics” mode and propel your driver through the car into building sized bowling pins.

6.  Mario Kart Wii – Nintendo Wii

Set in the Mushroom Kingdom, featuring outlandish and imaginative track designs, you race as Mario and company on go-karts that were engineered for vehicular battle.  But instead of using guns, these characters shoot turtle shells and bananas.  The experience can bring out the inner child in even the most hardened Grand Theft Auto player.

5.  Project Gotham Racing 4 – Xbox 360

Photo-realistic graphics? Check.  Motorcycles? Check.  Weather that changes from sunshine to thunderstorm? Check. ‘Nuff said.

4.  DiRT – Xbox 360

Dirt has never been so gorgeous.  Everything from the lush environments to the spectacular graphic makes this rally racer a must have.  And the damage system isn’t limited to your car – the environments will splinter and shatter; altering the track and affect the race.

3.  Grid – Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo DS

The team that brought you DiRT adds another entry to the already crowded videogame racing genre resulting with an experience that offers everything a road racing game should – speed, drama, precision, competition, and a sense of hard-won progression.

2.  Gran Turismo 5 Prologue – Playstation 3

The definitive racing simulation videogame, period.  Face it, not everyone will ever have the ability to drive a Ferrari, so why not experience the next best thing with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.  This essentially is just a demo to the full game, which comes out later in the year, but it still features about 70 cars and a half-dozen tracks.

1.  Burnout Paradise – Xbox 360, Playstation 3

Let’s face it, you’ve always wanted to push the pedal to the metal and watch your surroundings zip by in a blur.  And when that gets boring, you launch your car off a ramp and squint your eyes as the sun blinds the horizon.  You land and realize that not only did you jump over a building, but demolished a billboard in the process.  You can do all that and more in this game that features an open city with varying spots for you to race in and tons of hidden areas to find.
